THE NON-SURGICAL DOUBLE CHIN REDUCTION
Kybella (formerly known as ATX-101) is the first FDA-approved, injectable drug used to reduce the appearance of submental fat, more commonly known as a double chin.
Because of the extremely limited options for correction, submental fat has been an under-treated aesthetic issue. This is unfortunate because only lines and wrinkles cause more concern among cosmetic consumers.
A double chin can make you look older and heavier no matter what your age or weight. And, in many cases, this fat
doesn’t respond to lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise because genetics is often the cause.
Since April 2015, Kybella fat dissolver has been revolutionizing the world of non-surgical cosmetic treatments. You may have seen Kybella on GMA (Good Morning America), news programs, or while surfing the Internet. Many in the cosmetic industry are hailing it as the biggest innovation since Botox.
Until Kybella FDA approval, there was little you could do about submental fat except wear turtlenecks or get a surgical liposuction treatment. But now, this brand-new non-surgical cosmetic procedure makes it possible to ditch your double chin and achieve a tighter, more contoured look without incisions or downtime.
Kybella FDA Approved Uses
Kybella shots are intended to eliminate moderate-to-severe convexity associated with submental fat (double chin). Any use of the drug to eradicate subcutaneous fat outside the submental region has not been established in current Kybella clinical trials.
But further Kybella research is in the works. Kybella belly fat clinical trials are already underway. It looks likely that Kybella approval for more exciting treatment options will be forthcoming. Stay tuned!
The safety and effectiveness of Kybella for the eradication of submental fat was confirmed in two clinical trials. Each trial included 1022 randomly assigned adults with moderate-to-severe submental fat, who were given either Kybella or a placebo for up to six treatments. When checked 12 weeks after treatment, 82 percent of the patients in both groups who received Kybella had at least a one-grade improvement (according to the Kybella package insert).

One of the most important aspects of any successful cosmetic procedure is careful preparation. Before your Kybella chin reduction treatment, a thorough assessment and medical history will be completed to assure your safety and the best possible outcome.
You and the highly skilled providers at Luminous MedSpa will go over the Kybella side effects you need to be aware of, including:
Hardness in treatment area
More serious, however rare, side effects can include:
Nerve injury causing weakening of facial muscles
Of course, we recommend that you seek immediate care if you experience these rare side-effects and notify your practitioner here in our aesthetics practice.
Kybella is a safe, non-surgical procedure, so your treatment is performed in the comfortable, welcoming setting of Luminous MedSpa. Before the treatment begins, any pain relief will be administered if appropriate in your case. Then, using a special grid, your Certified Injection Specialist will carefully draw the boundaries for the injections on your skin.
Your Injection Specialist will then use the temporary grid marked on your chin as a guide and give you 14-50 injections, depending on your particular needs. The procedure is simple and straightforward, taking roughly 20 minutes to complete. Then you’re on your way.
Common Kybella Questions
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Kybella is comprised of deoxycholic acid, which breaks down and absorbs dietary fat. When Kybella shots are injected into subcutaneous fat, the underlying fat cells are destroyed and cannot rejuvenate
HOW IS IT ADMINISTERED?
Kybella chin reduction is injected subcutaneously using an area-adjusted dose. One treatment can consist of up to 50 tiny injections. Because the procedure relies on the natural process of fat breakdown, several treatments may be needed once a month.
WHO IS A CANDIDATE?
Anyone over 18, in good health with moderate-to-severe submental fat can reap the benefits of this aesthetic treatment. If your chin has a twin, and you’d like to improve its appearance without the risk of surgery – you’re the perfect choice for this exciting new procedure.
IS IT PAINFUL?
Pain is always relative, but most patients report only mild discomfort at the beginning of the procedure that subsides as the treatment progresses. Most people find an over-the-counter pain reliever is adequate to relieve any discomfort post-procedure. During subsequent treatment sessions, the level of discomfort lessens with the majority of patients.
CAN ANESTHESIA BE USED?
Yes. Topical anesthetics or lidocaine are available for those who feel they may need them. Be sure to broach this issue with your Certified Injection Specialist during your pre-procedure consultation. Your comfort is essential to having a positive treatment experience, and that’s our number one priority at Luminous MedSpa.
HOW LONG DOES THE PROCEDURE TAKE?
The treatment is uncomplicated, so in most cases you are in and out within 20 minutes. Come on in during your lunch break. Kybella is that speedy!
WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?
Most patients see noticeable results after 2-3 treatment sessions. The number of treatments required will depend on the amount of fat being eradicated.
HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?
Once your aesthetic goal has been reached, there is no need for further treatment. When Kybella kills those fat cells, they are gone for good!
IS THERE ANY DOWNTIME?
Kybella recovery is usually quick and uneventful. At most, patients report some minor bruising and swelling that resolves within several days. Mild discomfort may be experienced at the injection sites but is easily treated with OTC pain relievers. Some patients jump right back into their routine while others prefer to lay low for a couple of days after the procedure.
HOW MUCH DOES KYBELLA COST?
Kybella price is depends on how many injections are required for your needs, where you are located, and the experience of the practitioner providing the treatment. In general, most patients require 2-3 treatment sessions to obtain optimum results. We can provide you with an estimated cost for a full round of treatments during a free consultation at Luminous. Is Kybella worth it? Considering it’s a permanent solution, it could be considered a very wise investment.
WHO SHOULDN’T GET THIS TREATMENT?
Check with your physician if you are taking blood thinners before considering Kybella for double chin treatment. Caution should also be used if you’ve had prior surgery in the treatment area. If you have an active infection at the injection site, you must wait until it clears. Anyone who is pregnant or nursing is ineligible for the procedure. Those with a history of dysphagia (trouble swallowing) are not suitable candidates for Kybella.
WHAT ARE THE POTENTIAL COMPLICATIONS?
Because of the location close to certain anatomic structures, there is a risk of tissue or nerve damage caused by the injections. This could cause facial muscle weakness or an off-balance smile. When the treatment is performed by a licensed professional, however, these risks are minimal.
